The Faculty of Engineering will organise the Faculty-based in-person 214

Congregation on July 24, 2025 (Thursday) and July 25, 2025 (Friday) at the Grand Hall of Lee Shau Kee Lecture Centre at The University of Hong Kong, conferring degrees to graduands from different programmes in four sessions.
William Mong Distinguished Lecture
Professor Xu Liang, University of Pittsburgh, USA, will give a lecture on 12 June 2025 (Thursday) at Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wing Two, G/F Run Run Shaw Building, HKU, titled “The past, present and future of Land Surface Modeling: A Personal Perspective”. Register now!
Super material that helps build a green future
Applying the novel concept of ‘dislocation engineering’, Professor Mingxin Huang of the Department of Mechanical Engineering successfully discovered the Super Steel material, which set two world records in strength-ductility and strength-toughness combinations. The encouraging results were published in Science in 2017 and 2020, respectively.
HKU Engineering team developed aerial elephant trunk for advanced aerial manipulation
Professor Peng Lu and his team from the Department of Mechanical Engineering have developed innovative Aerial Elephant Trunk (AET), a novel aerial continuum manipulator excelling in performing complex aerial manipulation tasks, marking a significant leap forward for the development of the low-altitude economy.
HKU Engineering Professor Chao Xiang Receives 2025 Croucher Innovation Award
Professor Chao Xiang of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering has been honoured with the 2025 Croucher Tak Wah Mak Innovation Award for his pioneering research in silicon photonics, specifically his work on “integrating lasers for advanced photonic integrated circuits".

A research team led by Professor Tong Zhang from the Department of Civil Engineering has developed a computational tool, Argo, designed to accurately track ARGs in environmental samples, providing insights into their dissemination and associated risks.
Protecting public health through study of wastewater
Professor Tong Zhang, the Chair Professor (Environmental Engineering) of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), led a multidisciplinary sewage surveillance team of colleagues from environmental engineering and science, biological science, and public health, etc. during the COVID-19 pandemic to track and inform the public of the risk.
